Short Stories : Whatever it was

There she stood now - and looked at me as one was staring at a moldy piece of bread that one had just bought at a special price at the bakery around the corner. While her astonished look looked me up and down, I actually felt like a moldy bread. What's wrong with me I grabbed my nose uncertainly in order to be able to remove any embarrassment quickly. It couldn't have been in or on my nose. Everything was fine. My hairstyle? You don't look at anyone like that just because the hairstyle looked a bit messed up. The fly? For heaven's sake! Did I forget to close my fly after the last toilet? It wasn't that either. Everything that should be hidden was also hidden! But what was it? Why did she look at me with a look that shook me to the core of my self-confidence?

I could ask her. On the one hand, it would be the easiest way to find out the truth - and on the other hand, there is hardly a better way to completely embarrass yourself.

When I idiot was still busy looking for flaws in my appearance, she relieved me of the walk to Kanossa by addressing me:

"Is there anything about me? You look at me so strangely that I almost think I'm an alien. If you don't mind, I would like to know what it is that irritates you so much! "

To understand the situation better, you have to know that this girl and I have met and seen each other on the bus every day for the past three years. So it had haunted my head for three years without our exchanging a word. She didn't know my name - I didn't know her name. In short: we didn't know each other!

“I just wanted to ask you the same thing. Could it be that something about me is very noticeable today? Did a bird poop on my head? Do my bow legs attract more attention than usual? Have I lost one of my glass eyes ...? "

She suddenly started laughing heartily.

"My name is Susanne. Susanne Beck. And you?"

That scene happened eight years ago. In the meantime, Susanne and I have had two sweet little girls who were joined yesterday by a happy-looking boy. To this day I have no explanation for what happened on the bus back then. Susanne feels the same way. But something must have happened in our heads. No matter.

Whatever it was - it was a good thing!
