CHAPTER 5

At the last second

The panic got bigger and bigger and the oxygen became scarcer. We could hardly breathe. In addition, everyone started to fantasize and the dogs started to whimper.
It was just terrible.
Martin shouted: "We have to get out of here somehow, otherwise everyone will perish!" We shouted at him to stop spreading such fear. But he was somehow right. After about 10 minutes, we apologized to him.
Now a solution had to be found as quickly as possible to get out. But how should we do it?
Jette said: "You would have to have diving suits and equipment, put them on and then swim out the window." "But where do we get them from?" Asked Evelyn.
Everyone thought that maybe you could have a look in the closet. Nobody thought they could find anything there, but they still wanted to do it, because it doesn't cost anything to look. The only thing left to do was to decide who should look. After some back and forth we decided that Jenny should take on this task.
She went to the closet, opened it, and to our surprise, there were diving suits and equipment. The joy was great. But it was only short-lived, because when they were counting, everyone found that there were only 4 diving suits, but 5 diving equipment. What should we do now? If you don't get a diving suit, you will freeze to death if you stay underwater for too long. There was also a problem. This was that no one knew where Max and Lisa should be placed while we were swimming to the surface of the water.
Everyone racked their brains over it. But nobody had an idea. But suddenly, after about 2 hours, Anika had the saving idea. She said: “The dogs also get some kind of snorkel like we do and are put in one of the backpacks. They stay there until we are on the surface. How do you like my suggestion? ”Everyone agreed unanimously:“ Great idea! So we do it!"
So this problem was solved. Now all we had to do was put on the diving suits. But stop! We almost forgot that there are only 4 wetsuits and where should you get the snorkels for the dogs? Everyone was worried about these problems. It took another 3 hours to find a solution. And it looked like this: The one who does not have a diving suit clings to one and is then brought to the surface as quickly as possible to prevent freezing. As for the snorkel for the dogs, Jette had an idea. She said: "You could cut pieces out of the garden hose that is lying here and then use them for this." She was right. And that's exactly what we did.
After another 2 hours everyone was ready and Max and Lisa were stowed in one of the backpacks. They also had the homemade snorkel in their mouths.
We decided that Jenny would swim without a diving suit and hold on to Martin. Then it got serious. Because now Martin hit the window with an object. Suddenly such a huge amount of water came towards us and so much pressure built up that we only managed with great effort and strength to “defend ourselves” against this violence. And then, after about 10 minutes, we were in the middle of the ocean. It was done. Now Jenny had to be brought to the surface as quickly as possible. Martin swam up as fast as possible. But not too fast either, as it would have hurt them a lot.
In the meantime, Anika suddenly shouted: "Help me! My air hose has stopped working. I can't breathe and my eyes go black! ”
Jette and Evelyn swam to her. But the fainting was faster than we.
Fortunately we saw dolphins swimming on us. Apparently they somehow noticed that something was wrong. In any case, they immediately took Anika on their back and swam to the surface with her.
At about the same time Martin came back to us. Suddenly...
.. What was that? 3 shadows came towards us. We thought there were more dolphins. But everyone had been wrong. There were 3 sharks and they came closer and closer.
We wanted to swim away. But there was no longer enough time.
Jette shouted: "Please help me! I am attacked by the sharks!"
Now it was getting serious. - Can we defeat these sharks? If yes how? And would the oxygen supply in the bottles last until we were back up there? Not to forget: Will Max and Lisa survive the whole thing?
We tried desperately to save Jette. - Everyone hit the sharks in the eyes and pulled their tails, but it didn't help.
Fortunately, the dolphins came to our aid after a few minutes. This enabled us to free them and quickly swim to the surface. After 5 minutes the time had finally come.
We had made it and could breathe again. The dogs had also survived. Everyone was happy.
Luckily we found a raft that everyone could sit on.
It didn't take long for Jenny to shout, "There's a ship up there! We are saved! "
Now everyone else saw it too. Now we rowed our arms and shouted for help. Fortunately the sailors saw us and after about 10 minutes everyone was saved.
Now we warmed up and ate a nice noodle soup. The dogs were also given water and a bone.
After dinner, we told the seafarers our story and also told them that our next destination should be Greenland.
They said: “We want to go there too. If you want, you can with. What do you say? "" Thank you very much! ", Everyone said.
After a long drive we finally arrived in Greenland. A lot should happen.
Once there, a large dog sled and guide was waiting for us. This brought us to a small village by the sea. There were some waiting for us and greeted everyone warmly. We were really well received. Everyone of us was happy about that. Max and Lisa were also welcomed. The two ran with the huskies and played with them. It was fun to watch.
Time passed very quickly that day. It was time for dinner again. There was: fish, rice, fruit, vegetables and other tasty things.

It was very cold that night. Despite warm clothes, everyone froze. We could hardly sleep. The temperatures were around –30 degrees Celsius. Each of us had to get used to it first.
The next morning we were up early because there was a lot going on outside. It was a beautiful but cold day. The children built snowmen, sledged or fought a snowball. They also invited us to do so. It was very fun.
After noon some children and an adult showed us something from the island. We went dog sledding. It was a great time with them. For Max and Lisa too.
The children told us a lot about the island. We were amazed.
There was a big bonfire that evening. The residents told us stories of their ancestors, legends and they showed us dances. These were difficult to learn. But with a lot of practice, it worked.
The next morning we wanted to continue exploring the island. It should be really exciting.
Said and done. The day started with a lot of sunshine. But that should change soon.
After everyone said goodbye to the villagers, it started. On the way we saw some people from the village. Among them were 2 children with whom everyone had exchanged addresses.
Max and Lisa suddenly became restless. -What was wrong with them? Had they seen wolves? But less than 10 minutes later it was before us. We were startled. Nobody could move. But something had to be done, otherwise we would die. Everyone was at a loss. Nobody knew what to do. - Run back? No, that was not possible. At some point it would have reached us anyway. Martin said, "That's it. We're trapped. ”He was right.
We couldn't escape the sudden snowstorm.
Max and Lisa jumped into one of the backpacks. Now it was literally said: "Close your eyes and through." But that was easier said than done, because firstly we didn't know our way around and secondly, the snowstorm was so dense that you couldn't see anything. And it looked like it could take a long time before it stopped snowing.
- So it was.
In the meantime, we looked for shelter.
After a while, Jette found a cave where everyone could stay. We were happy about that.
At first everyone made themselves comfortable to fall asleep right away.
The weather didn't look much better the next morning. In addition, the cave entrance was blocked by snow in no time. It seemed hopeless that we could get out of there. Suddenly...
.. Someone outside called to us. - Who was that? Could that help us? Was that our salvation? We should find out soon.
After about half an hour, we knew who it was. It was Janne, one of our new friends. He could free us. We thanked him for that. This situation made the friendship even stronger.
On the way back to the village, we had a snowball fight.
Janne told us that snowstorms that come as a surprise are common. It was interesting what he said.
The road to the village was long. We were there only after 2 hours.
People greeted us and wanted to know what had happened. When we told them the story, there was something to eat first.
That night everyone went to bed early because the tour was very tiring.
In the middle of the night we were woken by a loud noise. It came from everywhere.
What was that? We saw from our igloo. But there was nothing. Or does it? It was a kind of wheezing of wild animals. But where did that come from? There was really nothing to be seen. So we wanted to go back to our igloo. But nothing should come of it, because suddenly 12 polar bears were standing in front of us. At first, none of us could scream for help out of sheer terror.
Fortunately, a resident noticed us and quickly brought 59 people to our igloo. They surprised the polar bears and defeated them in no time.
The shock was deep in everyone. No one could sleep that night because of this event.
